Steve Jobs Resigns: Apple Stock Tumbles in After-Hours Trading, Analysts remain Optimistic.

Apple's stock is tumbling in after-hours trading on news that Steve Jobs is resigning as head of the company. After closing at $376.18, Apple stock has dropped five percent to $357.02 as of 7:59ET, according to NASDAQ.

Jobs, who cited an inability to meet his "duties and expectations as Apple's CEO" as the causes for his stepping down after 14 years, continues to battle a form of pancreatic cancer more treatable than other forms of the disease.

He would be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook. Many analysts say Jobs, who was last year named "World's Most Valuable CEO" by Barron's, leaves a fundamentally-sound company able to survive without him at the helm.

"The real takeaway is not to underestimate the bench," Kevin Dede, an analyst at Brigantine Advisors, told Reuters. "He's got an amazing cast supporting the operation of the company."

Cook, who has served as COO since 2004, is "highly regarded" inside apple, Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw LLC also told Reuters. "From a succession perspective they could not possibly identify a better candidate."

Cook has already served in the role of interim CEO multiple times over the course of Jobs' battle with cancer, and the effect on stock prices has been mixed. On January 17, when Apple's board of directors last granted Jobs a leave of absence, Apple's stock dipped 6.2 percent to $326.72 on January 21 from $348.48 on January 14, before again rising. Still, even as stocks dropped, analysts expressed confidence in Cook's abilities to lead the company with Jobs.

"Cook has performed flawlessly in the past as AAPL's interim CEO," Gleacher's Brian Marshall said in January, according to Fortune. "[W]e expect he will become the full-time CEO of Apple this year with Jobs hopefully serving as a senior advisor."

In January, Fortune says, Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore called Cook a "proven operator and very capable of managing Apple's day to day operations." He added: "We also believe Apple's product road-map for the next 12 months is largely set and Cook (and team) will ensure acute execution on that road-map."

January 2009, when Jobs first took a leave of absence, Apple was in the middle of recovering from a stock market fall down that caused the company's stock to drop by over 50 percent, according to Forbes. That time, Apple continued its steady recovery from the financial collapse instead of Jobs' absence.

Two Of The West Memphis Three To Be Freed?

The West Memphis Three has been a cause celebre for metal fans and celebrities alike since 1993, when Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin were found guilty of the deaths of three Boy Scouts in Arkansas. Now it appears that two of the three will be released from an Arkansas prison tomorrow. According to WREG, an agreement has been reached in which the three will admit fault to the crime, with two being permitted to go free with time served.

Echols, Misskelley, and Baldwin were found guilty, with the prosecution stating that the three boys were murdered in a satanic ritual. Echols was sentenced to death, Misskelly was sentenced to life imprisonment plus two 20 year sentences, and Baldwin was sentenced to life imprisonment. While DNA evidence was found not to match the defendants, the three remained in jail. A 1996 documentary, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hills, outlined the case and trial, and marked the first time Metallica let their music be used for a film. Many metal fans rallied around the three, stating that they were unfairly sentenced due to their love of metal, belief in Satan and their appearance. In 2002, The Rollins Band released Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three, in which the band covered Black Flag songs with contributions from the likes of Ice T, Hank III, and Clutch’s Neil Fallon. There are several questions remaining, and hopefully they will be answered tomorrow. We will follow up once the hearing is complete.

It is the calm ahead of the fall season storm of new shows these days, as summer series wind up their seasons, procedurals air reruns and plenty of us bury our noses in good or even not-so-good books.

"The Hour": BBC America debuts this promising Brit series, which is influenced by both "Broadcast News," and a bit of "Mad Men." Set in 1956, it follows three broadcasters (one of whom is played by Dominic West, Aka McNulty, from "The Wire") as they set about creating a new news show. Beyond their romantic triangle, however lurks some espionage doings. (Troy Patterson of Slate has an entertaining review.) The cast also features Ben Whishaw and Romola Garai. 7 p.m., BBC America

"Conan": The redhead's guests tonight include the ever-lovable Paul Rudd, and Jessica Chastain ("Tree of Life"). 11 p.m., TBS

"The Daily Show": Jon Stewart welcomes Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, and now a political analyst for MSNBC. They should have plenty to chat about. 11 p.m., Comedy Central.

Kate Gosselin out at TLC, 'Kate Plus 8' canceled at Season 8

Kate Gosselin, we maybe knew ye a little too well.

But after an appropriately-numbered 8 seasons, TLC is terminating the reality star mother's series, "Kate Plus 8."

"TLC has decided not to renew another season of Kate Plus 8," the network says in a statement, first reported by People. "By the end of this season Kate Plus 8 will have hit the 150 episode mark (including Jon & Kate Plus 8); an outstanding milestone. TLC hopes to check in with Kate and the family periodically with specials in the future."

Debuting in 2007, originally on Discovery Healthy, "Jon & Kate Plus 8" followed the everyday trials of a Pennsylvania family raising 8 children and later, to much higher ratings, the dissolution of the titular parents' marriage.

Following her divorce from Jon Gosselin in 2009, the renamed "Kate Plus 8" shifted the focus to the female Gosselin starting in Season 6.

Promoting the Season 8 premiere, Gosselin newly expressed her uncertainty about the show's future, saying "nobody's told me" when asked if it was on the chopping block.

Feel free to share your eulogies, flattering or otherwise, in the comments.

Four Dead After Stage Collapses At Sugarland Show in Indiana

Four people are dead and reportedly 24 more injured after a stage collapsed tonight at the Indiana State Fair before the country band Sugarland was to perform. High winds were believed to have been the cause.

A reporter for WANE-TV in Indiana was in the crowd at the time and described what happened like this: "The wind just picked up and the stage just caught and the roof just caught and it went up like a sail and then it crashed forward into the people standing in the front. There were public trapped beneath and everyone was running and screaming. They were asking any medics or nurses not to leave."
